STORM³D Is a cube case Based on Defyant’s Storm’d mod from a while back.
I was not really satisfied with how loud my desktop case was, and how much light it made either, so I got to drawing, and eventually came up with an idea of what I wanted to do. Then I saw Storm’d which blew my little mind, and I wanted to do something similar. It is by no means, a copy of that case.
I built everything from scratch. It uses 1/4” and 3/16” gray #2074 Acrylic that I bought which is held together with modder’s corner cubes. The Acrylic itself is a wonderful thing, because it is very transparent, but only when there is light behind it. otherwise, it has a black, mirrored appearance. this allows me to selectively use lighting where I want to show off certain parts of the case, and to not light areas which I do not want seen.
I made the case have all the features that I wanted in a case, that nothing on the market could ever deliver. First off, I decided to water cool it, using a Black Ice GT Stealth 2×120mm radiator on the bottom, and a 1X120mm radiator out the back to provide enough cooling power for the Prescott (read PressHOT) Intel P4 processor, and the Oc’d BFG Geforce 6800 Ultra (more like ultra heat maker) This allowed me to use 3 very quiet 120mm fans which are near silent when paired with the 3 channel fan controller.
I also invented my own feature which I like to refer to as ‘Stealth Mode’ which means that the case should not make it’s presence known. I use 2 switches to turn the UV Led’s on and off, as well as the front Thermal displays. These
2 switches take care of almost all light emitted from the case (Except for the mobo LED and hdd LED) these lights off combined with the fan speeds turned down makes the case ultra quiet and unnoticed (read: I can sleep with it on at night)
The Thermal Displays also work with the Acrylic to hide them when they are not in use. with the flip of a switch, you can clearly see them shining through the darkened acrylic, but turn them off, and it goes to it’s black mirror finish with no sign of anything underneath.
I used 5 Laser LED setups (3 LED’s each) to light up the UV reactive dye in the liquid especially for the Danger Den Nv-68 Water block on the gpu, the tubes, and the custom fabricated resivoir.
The case is split into 2 horizontal halves by the motherboard. underneath, is the 2×120 radiator, the Hiper 580w Modular Power Supply, The 2 Hard drives (74 GB Raptor, 500 GB Barracuda) and the Swiftech Mpc655(Laing/DD D5 Pump). On the top half are the motherboard, Dvd Burner, Audigy2 ZS Pro Front Panel, and the rest of the Water cooling loop.
Facts:
Time Spent: 2 years in the making; at least 300 hours of work have been put into the case
Fried Motherboards: 1
Fried Video Cards: 1
Number of thermal displays I went thru to get a pair of working ones: at least 6
UV LED’s: 15
Threats to kill kittens after frying [Insert Part here]: 3 or 4 at least (read my worklog for proof ~~ Sorry Dave :P)
Setup:
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
Intel Prescott P4 3.2 ghz
BFG OC GeForce 6800 Ultra
WD Raptor 74 GB HDD
Seagate Barracuda 500 GB HDD
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS PRO
Hiper 580 W Modular PSU
W/C Loop:
Swiftech Mpc655(Laing/DD D5 Pump)
Swiftech Apogee Cpu Block
Danger Den Nv-68 Rev. 1.1 Gpu Block
HWLabs 2×120mm Black Ice GT Stealth Radiator
HWLabs 1×120mm Black Ice GT Stealth Radiator
Custom Resivoir
Tygon 11/16” ID 5/8” OD Tubing
Overall, it is a Very versitile case with the features that I use, and none of the junk that I don’t.
