Summary:
Just the raw basics of resin casting.

I know that I could explain every detail of resin casting, but I could fill at least two pages on constructing a positive alone. Since you can post ‘comments’ or ‘questions’, Please feel free to ask and post any relevant info about casting or mold making. I could give specifics on the materials used, but some of what I used is no longer being produced. The manufacturer has since replaced the rubber silicone I used and reformulated the recipe, so the results will differ.

Rubber silicone is flexible. This flexibility allows you to make incredibly detailed molds. In this slide show, I decided to make a flexible window mod. Building 3D inserts that would stand out from an ordinary window mod. This thick casting process allowed me room to embed the LEDs right into the final insert.

I know a few of you are casting parts in a similar process. Feel free to comment on your experiences and what type of casting you are working with.

Warning, casting is NOT easy! Be prepared to fail at least a few times.

A secondary power supply

A secondary power supply might not be needed. LEDs usually don’t draw much amperage. As far as heat, I have had no issue with the clear resin and heat. I would encourage you to start with a small project. Maybe a basic window mod like the one I featured here. Trust me, it was challenging and I would hate for you to get extremely frustrated by trying too much too fast. I will pm you and ask you more questions on what you have in mind.

I also want to add a link to the resin’s I used.

I used the mass clear casting resin. I was told it is used for casting’s greater than three quarters of an inch thick. I will post more info if any of you are interested.

Just wondering if you would

Just wondering if you would suggest asecondary power supply for a complete light system and servos? I’m thinking even with the low LED power use it might be best for me to add a small power supply just for the extras. Also do you think it would work to use this as the way to form my own custom case from scratch? Would it retian more heat than other materials? Or is heat dispursment about the same?

Thanks again for the

Thanks again for the links.
I pm’d you.

I encourage any of you needing help in casting and mold making to ask Gary your questions. If you have seen any of his work, you know the type of detail he achieves. Awesome work:)

Chris , How Big is

Chris ,
How Big is it?
What is the final cast going to be,Some type of plastic? Should it be a 2 part mold?

Thanks Gary, Very cool

Thanks Gary,
Very cool site.
I’m starting a much more ambitious project this next go around. My ‘positive’ will have a few extreme undercuts. Do you have any advice on how to handle undercuts? I know that might seem like a loaded question, but with the cost of rubber silicone being so high, if I can avoid costly simple mistakes, I will be a happier modder:)
Thanks for any advice.
Chris
