FCC Adds Check for Broadband Speed

Posted 03/12/2010 at 05:46:24pm

I went on the FCC's new website, and submitted my info to them. At either rate, I have Time Warner (Road Runner), and I can't really complain about my connection, except the upload speed. I get, on average, around 13MBPS download and 480Kbps upload. Latency is low, too. I feel that I am very gifted to have what I have because I know a lot of people in America are still stuck with 7MBPS or lower.

Honestly, one thing people need to keep in mind is that just because you have a 10MBPS download rate, that does not mean you're downloading files off of the Internet at 10MBPS... Most web-servers cap download speeds at around 200KBPS-1MB. I've only recently noticed that I've kept a good download rate of around 2MBPS from sources like Steam, iTunes, and even our beloved MxPC for the No BS podcast.

At either rate, I would rather sacrifice 3MBPS of my download rate to get 3MBPS added to my upload rate, and definitely improve latency as much as possible, even though mine is good.

 **EDIT**

Also, has anyone noticed how fast Amazon MP3 songs download? Jeez, it's litterally zoom, zoom. I can't even open the download tab in Firefox to watch how fast one 5MB file takes to download from Amazon.

Netflix Bails on $1 Million Contest to Settle Lawsuit

Hey, I did not know this. I had read, when I first signed up, that Netflix didn't want to offer XXX-rated material due to a company policy decision on it; however, if you say they have Girls Gone Wild dvd's then I can't argue with that. "Goes to search it now"

Netflix Bails on $1 Million Contest to Settle Lawsuit

Posted 03/12/2010 at 03:13:45pm

Well, to be honest, it is not like there were any XXX movies available to rent from Netflix at anytime in their history? So, what if Billy knows that Joe likes to watch the Rugrats? I'm watching the X-Files (all seasons) right now, and I still do not see how that is too big of a concern to my privacy; however, I understand the FTC's side of the issue. Their job is to ensure a neutral/private communication stream for the mass, and that is something I fondly believe in. If that means even Netflix has to be stopped then so be it.

Actually, according to a new theory, if you did go back in time to stop something from happening, you would merely just create another Universe with that new variable. So, really, everyone from this Universe is still basically fucked.

OnLive Launching June 17 at $15 Per Month

Posted 03/10/2010 at 10:49:48pm

So, basically, for everyone out there who wants the sweet, short story here it is. OnLive is going to charge you $15 dollars a month just to connect to their network; however, you will still have to pay to rent/buy video games off of their network. In other words, it would be far cheaper to get your lazy ass up, walk/drive to the gaming store, and pickup the video game for a week for $4.

 Doing the math here...

1 week = $4... so, Pi times 3.534246744543 to the exponet of 10... Ah, yes, here we go... It would cost you $16 dollars a month, plus $3 dollars for gas, assuming you waste only a gallon to drive five min. back and forth to the store. That total comes to $19 dollars a month.

Yep, pay $15 dollars to connect to the OnLive service, pay $4 dollars to rent a game, another $4 the next week, and so on and so forth till we get to a month... Ah yes, total comes to $31 dollars. Ouch...

I know where I'm shopping.

Leave No Trace: How to Completely Erase Your Hard Drives, SSDs and Thumb Drives

I do find it rather interesting that someone can get a H.D.D., that has been written over with 1/0's, and manage to still recover data. I would imagine you would have to have some pretty good software to make such a thing happen.

I still believe that the most secure way of erasing your H.D.D./S.D.D. is to use Darik's Boot and Nuke program, and to also nail the H.D.D./S.S.D. with a sludge-hammer. Personally, I had some pics of my gf one time, and needless to say, I did not want the world to see them. Ha. Ha. So, after I no longer wanted them, I used Darik's Boot and Nuke to erase the data on the H.D.D. Kind of wish I didn't now. :/

I would just like to further state that I think this is one of your better articles to come out in recent weeks. Really helps new beginners understand why erasing isn't enough, and how to properly dispose of data on their computers.
