Pink Floyd Wins Court Decision, Can Take Songs Off iTunes
Posted 03/11/2010 at 06:13:38pm
Actually, this isn't ENTIRELY true. You can attach a malformed payload to a data file that can, when read and processed by a certain program, cause that program to do something unexpected... or expected by the virus writer. Like a buffer overflow, etc. Of course this presupposes that the user uses the program you expec them to, but if you target a very common app, say iTunes, then you can get some hits.

New Hard Drives May Force XP Users to Upgrade to 7
Posted 03/11/2010 at 01:12:59pm
Well, I thought it was pretty clear that MY point was there aren't 3 methods.
Adding them to steam is only a method of launching the game, nothing more. No different than starting it through the start menu, or creating an icon on your desktop.
As I indicated, XP Mode isn't a method of running your game as it will work with almost no games.
So, you really only have 2. Run it native, or play with the compatibility mode settings. Unless the game in question is pretty old, it will probably run fine without the latter.

New Hard Drives May Force XP Users to Upgrade to 7

Citing the bad behavior of a couple of apps your company uses doesn't indicate something wrong with 7, it actually indicates that they were likely poorly written. They probably used "undocumented apis", or took shortcuts that are XP specific, like people that wrote software that stores files in the installation directory instead of the user profile. Those broke bad under Vista and 7, but it isn't the OSes fault. I assume the developers knew better, but they just wanted to be lazy.

So, I will just say here that this new spam filter thing is absolute shit.
New Hard Drives May Force XP Users to Upgrade to 7

Uh, I am pretty darn sure that adding a non-steam game to Steam only gives you a shortcut. They don't update non-steam games, even if they have a Steam version of the same game.
Also, XP Mode is not for games, and won't likely work with games more complex than Solitare. It is a VM, and a VM that doesn't support 3D APIs.

New Hard Drives May Force XP Users to Upgrade to 7

In my opinion XP is already obsolete, and it happened about... 5 months ago now. It was great in it's time, but unfortunately, that time was extended way past the point it should have ended.

IT Survey: Macs Less Expensive to Manage than PCs
Posted 03/10/2010 at 12:18:17pm
This survey is useless. The people that said Macs are cheaper to maintain are drinking the Apple flavored kool-aid, and their responses are to be taken as HIGHLY biased.

Verizon Says: 4G Network Capable of 5-12mbps Download
Posted 03/09/2010 at 12:03:53pm
Personally, I couldn't care less about the speed of my cellular network. I don't tether, and the only thing my phone uses the internet for is syncing contacts and calendar, or getting the weather. I may occasionally go to the movie listings website while I am out to see what the play times are. Beyond that though, I have zero desire to browse the web on a cell phone. I will do that on my computer, thanks.

Ubisoft DRM Authentication Servers Fail In Europe
Posted 03/08/2010 at 01:05:48pm
Oh, Steam is indisputably DRM. You have to have a Steam account, and be initially logged in with that account, to play a game. You can then switch it to offline mode.
However, Steam gets a pass in my book because it also privides ME some benefits while protecting the publisher's content. It gives me convenient access to my games, friends lists, updates to games (even if that particular benefit is hit and miss).
That Windows Live thing tries to do the same, but fails miserably in every way possible. So, while it is also DRM in the same vein as Steam, it was implemented by a bunch of barely trained monkeys and fails spectacularly.
No other DRM comes close to Steam, and the rest of them can go to hell in a handbasket for all I care.

Microsoft Demos Gaming Across the PC, Xbox 360, and Windows Phone 7

Generally speaking, whenever I see a post start with "nutcracking snack", I know the rest will make as much sense as starting posts off with that nonsense, so I just skip it. You might want to start ignoring that guys posts as well, you will sleep better at night.
