I can appreciate Gandalf’s contribution to airflow problems. You have two beautiful pets.
The Mtron is fast and quiet
The Mtron is fast and quiet which is what I wanted. I could only afford a 16Gb for Treasure Chest and so had to use Vlite to install Vista (it initially needs just over 16Gb spare space and then collapses down to 8 to 10Gb. For Ambient I went for 32Gb MTron and so did not alter Vista – but it comes with so many extras I don’t need so may change this – however I still have space for Office and a couple of big games. Bioshock currently. I love the speed and even sitting right next to me I dont hear whirring disk drives, and all the fans are super quiet scythe S-Flex. I think the price will drop quickly this year so soon we should bigger and cheaper solid state drives!

Modded SILVERSTONE Black Crown Series CW02B-MXR ATX Media Center / HTPC Case.
I have a dog – a husky called Gandalf and I had an Antec 900 on the floor under my desk. Husky hair and the twin 120 mm intake fans weren’t working.
The ‘donor’ PC had a lot dusty cables and noisy drives, so I wanted to re-build in a new case with more stealth, and a lot less noise…
Originally I wanted standard HTPC horizontal case to go over or under my Yamaha receiver, but then I thought that might be a bit boring and not worth writing up.
My plan was to make a very quiet (ambient noise) theatre / gaming / desk PC with water cooling (to ambient temperature) – hence the name: “ambient”
I used a Solid State Disc again (as I did in Treasure Chest) but this time went for 32GB so that Vista would install with no forcing. Backed this up with a fast 4GB USB drive and 1TB Caviar hard disk.
The finished set-up:
Dog and PC separated…
Asus P5KE wifi mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GHz chip
4 GB Corsair Ram
PNY XLR8 Invidia 8800 GTX gpu, with modded water cooling addition to fan.
32GB Mtron Solid State Disk as C: drive
1TB Caviar HDD as D: drive
PNY XLR8 4 GB 200x USB drive
LG HD and Blu-ray DVD optical drive
Thermaltake Liquid Cooling
UV and Blue cold cathode lighting
Yamaha RX-V361 connected by Fibre Optic SDIF
Rocketfish wireless rear speaker system
Logitech THX Surround 5.1 Sound speaker
3 additional Scythe S-Flex 120 mm ultra quiet fans
This is a very quiet unit to sit on the desk, rather than under it.
Ready for overclocking.
Regards
Bruce
